There are two main competitions run by North Brisbane Lapidary Club throughout the year.
The Christmas Competition
This is a fun event held at the annual Christmas party and judged by the members. It is not about the best technique or experience, but appeal and originality. Each year the competition is assigned a theme, but there are no other strict criteria. Members vote by placing coins in cups, which then becomes the prize money.
The Peter Smith Memorial President’s Challenge
(Renamed from The President’s Challenge in 2021 in honour of the the commitment from Peter Smith running this competition over previous years).
Although the Challenge is run by the club (for NBLC club members only (Level One)), it is judged using the Australian Federation of Lapidary and Allied Crafts – Competitors & Judging Manual; it is independently judged by accredited judges assigned by QLLACA. Marks are given for the different aspects of the work with overall comments from the judges. This is a great way to assess the progress you are making over the years.
